A Home with A History...
where "The laughter and love of people vibrate..."
Purchased by Dr. Maya Angelou in 1991 after she moved to Winston-Salem to teach at Wake Forest University, this home is where the iconic author and civil rights activist lived and worked until her passing in 2014.
With potential as a residence or bed and breakfast, our hope is for the home to be purchased by an individual or institution that honors and appreciates Dr. Angelou’s legacy.
Oprah at Valley Road
"...that was my favorite place to be..."
Oprah Winfrey, one of Dr. Angelou's closest friends, was likely her most famous house guest. In 1993, Oprah interviewed Dr. Angelou in the upstairs sunroom. During the video, which is linked below, we see moments of them cooking and dining together, Oprah reflects “This is the place that most feels like home to me," and "The laughter and love of people vibrates in this house."
Oprah also references the home by name for the forward of the 2015 edition of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" released after Dr. Angelou's death. "Sitting at her kitchen table on Valley Road...listening to her read poetry...that was my favorite place to be...," she writes.
